Oct 28, 2007· If you''re just going directly downward and already have the primary hole drilled, you shouldn''t have any problem with the end mill. The counterbore is doing the same thing, it just has a pilot. You run into problems with mill bits in drill presses when you try to put a side load on the bit.
Jul 10, 2008· End mills fit in a chuck providing the chuck capacity can handle the diameter of the end mill cutter. Whether that be in a chuck on a drill press or a mill they can work for flat bottom holes. The problem I see using an end mill for anything but single round holes to make them flat bottomed is side torque cutting control.
Oct 27, 2017· You want to be very cautious about using a drill press as a mill. Drill presses are not generally built to withstand the loads generated on the quill by running an end mill etc. They are by and large no where near as massive either so the cutter will chatter leaving a poor finish. You can use a mill as a drill but not really the other way around.
Oct 31, 2016· This is strictly plunge milling. I put the end mill in the drill press, and it roughly follows the starter hole down, at least good enough for my purposes. Th At 3600 rpm, the end mill does a lot of ugly bouncing. At 2500 rpm, it is better. I suppose the 4 flute end mill would be .

Regardless of whether a chuck is safely secured to the drill press with a taper shank or threaded shank, an end mill should never, and I do mean never no exceptions be held in a drill chuck on any machine, whether a drill press or a milling machine. May 27, 2014· I doubt that you be able to accomplish this task in a drill press. For one, it requires a lot of force to cut the steel you described. And two, the drilling action from a drill press is not really accurate enough to achieve what you want. I use carbide end mill cutters for the work that I do. But I also use Bridgeport Mill machine too.
